We are on the move again So I’m getting to see lots of different campgrounds. After leaving Melbourne, we went to Anastastia State Park near St. Augustine. After setting up the camper in a lovely shaded site with lots of birds for me to watch, R&N headed for the big wide beach on the ocean and spent the afternoon. For supper they went into St. Augustine and ate in old town at The Colombia, a 105 year old restaurant on St. George St. The next morning we were off again for two nights at Salt Springs National Forest. We got a nice corner site so I could watch everyone walking by. I think every camper in the park had a dog or two with them, so I had a lot of guarding to do. It was a hot day so R&N too off to go swimming in the spring. They said that the 72 degree water was beautiful and cooling, but I’m going to take their words for it---water if for drinking as far as I’m concerned. We had spaghetti for supper at the camper. I say we because I got my own plate, because I love it so much! The next day they decided to go to Silver Glen Springs for another swim. They had quite a surprise with they got there-----a manatee was swimming in the spring! In February Sea World released some manatees back into the wild. This was one of them. His name was Lil’ Joe.(or Little Joe) He had been in captivity for 20+
years, living both in Florida at a couple places and the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. They decided to release him and for what ever reason, he found his way to Silver Glen. He had been in the spring for several days and the ranger said they thought he may be sick or at least missing being around people. Sea World was going to come and collect him the next day and figure out what is going on with him. In the meantime anyone that was swimming in the spring got to swim with a manatee as long as they didn’t bother him or touch him. If you want to know more about Lil’ Joe, check out these websites: http://www.cincinnatizoo.org/documents/SendingManateesHomepdf.pdf http://www.wildtracks.org/Florida/hp_ljo.htm or Google Lil Joe+manatee for lots more info. The next day we were off again---this time to Perry Florida where we stayed in a KOA. We were only there for one night, but they had a nice pool and the laundry got done. Today we are at Carabelle Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico. We are staying at a new campground called Sunset Isle on an island adjacent to downtown. It had campsites and also marina slips. There is one old boat/barge at the marina that was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. The boat is in pretty bad shape, but is still floating! The campground is just now being developed, but it has potential and hopefully some of the kinks will be worked out before we are back this way. There is a whirlpool (not heated and no bubbles yet), a beautiful (unheated so far) pool with fountains in it and wi-fy (which is very slow and doesn’t reach the camper)---like I said… kinks………..The pool is lovely and we parked quite near it so I can watch all the swimmers. R&N are here to visit Nancy’s cousin Rod. R&s went swimming Friday afternoon and then spent most of Saturday with Rod and his wife Connie. They had a great time with them just catching up, visiting the local museum, and eating a yummy lunch at a local café. They got to meet some of the local people, including the ex mayor of the town, a super lady who gave the tour of he museum. Saturday night R&N drove to Ochlackonee Bay and had dinner at a seafood place on the water. Nancy had shrimp and grits----yum yum. Sunday they drove down to St. George Island for ice cream and a walk on the beach. Rod came over to the camper in the afternoon. We are off to Alabama tomorrow-----I’ll keep you posted the next time we have internet.
