July Trip

We are traveling again.  I couldn't figure out what was going on at first.  Instead of us packing up our camper and going somewhere, three rigs showed up at our house.  Two parked in the backyard and one in the neighbor's driveway.  I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I knew everyone----they were some of our friends that we camp with at Wickham park in Florida in the winter. The six humans in the campers spent two days enjoying the lake.  Then, just when I thought we weren't going anywhere, I was scooped up, put in the truck, and we were off in a pack with the other campers.

Our first stop for the eight humans and me was Lighthouse Park in Port Hope Michigan.  We were camped on Lake Huron near a pretty lighthouse. The Point Aux Barques Lighthouse is located here. After being built 160 years ago, it is still a Great Lakes navigational point and now an historical landmark.  There is a nice museum in the lighthouse.  We checked out a nearby almost ghost town named Grindstone City ( where once a flourishing industry produced the largest and finest grindstones, scythestones, and honestones in the world) and it's wonderful ice cream store.

After two nights, we were off to Sturgeon Valley Campground in Wolverine. We were joined there by two more Wickham campers. (Now our group numbered 12)  We spent three nights there.  I'm not sure I liked that place or not.  There were chickens running around and under our camper and I could see white bunnies out the door.  Although I didn't see them, I heard there were also ducks, goats, lots more bunnies, a mother duck with 15 ducklings and a sheep!  The humans went tubing down the Sturgeon River.  The campground owner rented them tubes and they could do the 1.5-hour trip as many times as they wanted.  Nancy said that she thought she hit every rock and ran into every low hanging branch the entire length of the river!

We spent the next five nights in Cheboygan at Waterways Park. (One couple left and now we numbered 10 humans and me) The park was on the waterway that goes across the top of Michigan and also on a bike trail that goes from Grayling to Mackinaw.  The humans went somewhere almost every day.  One day they packed up and took a boat to Mackinac Island.  Ron took his bike, but Nancy decided not to take hers.  Some of the group rode their bikes all the way around the island.  R&N decided to splurge and eat lunch at the buffet at the Grand Hotel.  One evening R&N rode their bikes a ways one the bike trail.  Other days were spent exploring Mackinaw City, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs.  One afternoon they went to a beach on Lake Huron.  One really great part of this stop-----Ron bought smoked fish and I got some!

Next stop was Benzonia Michigan at the Timberline Campground.  We were joined there by three more couples, who stayed with us for only the time we were there.  Benzonia was near Frankfort, and one night they went to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.  Some of the group went wine tasting and checked out Sleeping Bear Dunes, while others explored the area and the Leelanau peninsula.  One day R&N went with friends the explore the state forests and seasonal roads.  They even found a field full of yaks.  The campground had a pool so that got a lot of use by my humans.

Today we moved to the last stop on our trip---Lucky Lake Campground in Rothbury.  We were joined here by another Wickham couple so now we are 12.  On they way here we stopped at Little River Casino for breakfast and a little gambling.

About Me

My photo
I am a Swantonian Bushcat. (I was born under a bush in Swanton Ohio),but my people think that I have a lot of Chartreaux in my bloodline because I pray for what I want, am very quiet, lay on my back a lot, and am shaped much like a potato on toothpicks.
