Lake Okechobee
|
We finally got to see Lake Okeechobee! R&N have been driving around the lake for years and have stopped several times, climbed the dike surrounding the lake and saw a sea of grass. They were beginning to think that the lake was a huge myth, like the early settlers did. But finally, while going over a bridge over the locks as they enter Lake Okechobee….there was the lake!
We spent three days at Okeechobee at Silver Palms RV Resort. It is probably one of the nicest places we have ever stayed---beautiful sites, exceptionally clean, lots of activities (Nancy won another $60.00+ at bingo) and a great pool and hot tub. R&N went to a super bowl party in the rec hall. The park chef (he serves lunch three days a week) made hot wings and subs. We had a tree right by our site and I got to watch grackles fight and make noise all day. The humans have been riding their bikes a lot and there were lots paved streets to ride here. I think they ought to get a cat basket so I could go along!
We drove north to Davenport through orange groves, and cattle farms. We stayed at Kississmee South (the same place we have stayed before, but then it was called Three Worlds). After pulling into our site and meeting the neighbors, R&N went down to the pool and spent the afternoon talking to people they met here other years. They like to come here because of the people they have met over the years, but the park isn’t in very good repair and doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I still think it is neat---there are sand hill cranes all over the place. I love to watch them, but they are really big and scary if they get to close to the camper. The park is close to Orlando and that is a plus.
Saturday Feb 11 was a special day---it was Ron’s birthday and he got a big surprise----both boys came to see him. They flew in late Friday and stayed in a motel and then came to the campground early morning to surprise him. He didn’t have a clue that they were coming! The days they were here were the coldest we have had since we got here. It was sunny, but only in the 50 and 60s. So instead of hanging out in the pool like was planned, they all drove into Orlando and went to flea markets. At least they all came back here for supper of steak and cake and ice cream, so I didn’t miss out on all of the celebration. We all played dominos in the evening. (At least I tried to help shuffle them) . #2 son had to leave on Sunday morning, but #1 son stayed until Monday morning. Sunday the humans went to Lake Wales and checked out Spook Hill (your car will roll up hill if you put it in neutral at the bottom), and Bok Tower. They even got to hear a live carillon concert at the tower played by a visiting musician from The Netherlands. He spent Sunday night in the camper with us---so I had someone new to sleep with.![]() ![]() |

Wednesday we packed up and drove to Melbourne. We are back up at Wickham Park. We are not in our old spot—this time we are in the outside circle, but still in loop A. Our site is huge and has a live oak shading the camper. I haven't seen a squirrel yet, but I bet one is out there somewhere. This year I’m going to be more vigilant and make sure they don't eat any more holes in the outdoor carpet. The humans unhooked the camper and drove out to see if the beach (and ocean) was still there. Duh…it was (even a cat knows that!)
Thursday they spent part of the day at the beach and then drove up to Titusville to Manatee Hammock, another county park where Harry and Bobbi are staying. This one is on the Indian River, right across from Cape Canaveral. There was supposed to be a rocket launch and they wanted to see it. While they were standing on the pier, three dolphins swam by! At least they got to take a picture of something, because the launched was scrubbed at the last minute. So they went out to eat instead at a nearby fish place.
